Australian Education System
The Australian education system is recognized as one of the best in the world!
The Australian education system includes primary, secondary and tertiary education.
Primary and Secondary Education (School Education)
Primary and Secondary Education is similar across Australia, with little difference between states and territories. There are 13 years in primary and secondary school. Compulsory education in Australia is from Year 1 to Year 9 or 10, and students are generally between the ages of 6 and 16. After Year 10, students can choose whether to continue their education according to their own and family circumstances.
- Primary School: 7 or 8 years, from kindergarten/preschool to Year 6 or 7
- Secondary School: 3 or 4 years, from Year 7 to 10, or Year 8 to 10
- High School: 2 years, Year 11 to 12
Tertiary Education
- Higher education (including university)
- Vocational Education and Training
Semester
In Australia, the academic year usually starts in February or March. There are 4 terms in the primary and secondary school year: January, April, July and October. There are 2 weeks of vacation every year and 6 weeks of summer vacation at the end of the year.
Advantages of Studying in Australia
In addition to the environment, social security, teaching quality and academic qualifications that are generally recognized by the world, there are also these advantages:
- The short length of the academic year. For undergraduate (some majors such as education, engineering is generally 4 years), usually, 3 years; 1 year, 1.5 years or 2 years for graduate students, depending on schools
- Flexible start date. Generally, most schools start in February and July of each year, while some schools start in April and October. The start date mainly depends on the school curriculum and the type of study students are enrolled in. The start date of English language courses is quite flexible.
- International students with a bachelor’s degree or master’s by coursework degree can apply for a two-year graduate visa, with master by research can apply for 3 years, with a doctoral degree can get 4 years. Therefore, they will have time to find a job in Australia or apply for immigration and other visas after graduation.
- Because Australia is a traditional immigration country, graduates can apply for skilled immigration or employer-sponsored or other immigration visas to obtain Australian status under certain conditions.
